Solar Roadways Shifts into Drive with First Challenge Award
Posted by: Winston Rice on 10/07/2010 5:00:00 PM

The Challenge community has spoken, and today we’re excited to announce that Sagle, Idaho-based Solar Roadways received the highest number of Challenge community votes and will receive the $50,000 award.

A brainchild of Scott and Julie Brusaw, the unique concept to make roads out of recyclable solar panels instantly caught the attention of the Challenge community.  This award marks the first winner of the Challenge, which has attracted more than 3,500 ideas. More than 74,000 people have used the platform to vote and comment, and we are encouraged by the passion around collectively trying to solve big energy challenges.

The voting process was monitored throughout this Challenge by GE and BrightIdea, a leader in online innovation platforms.  Based on the Challenge terms and conditions votes in violation of these terms were removed and considered ineligible.

Congratulations again to Solar Roadways and thanks to the entire Challenge community for your active engagement.  Stay tuned for news on the announcement of our Innovation Award winners in early November.

Congratulations to Solar Roadways! They were definitely one of the first to submit and have been incredibly active. Excited to find out what comes next..

I am happy for Solar Roadways who showed obvious depth and breadth of interest in their idea through their many comments. However, I'd like Brightidea to "out" the source of the ineligible votes because they now amount to a smear. I have asked for this on the blogs and via email to the Challenge operators.

Congratulations to Scott and Julie Brusaw for taking the first prize. You two obviously hit on something here and I am very happy that you two will be given the opportunity to develop your idea further.

Congratulations to Solar Roadways for winning the voting round!

This is fantastic! Of the ideas submitted, this was one of my favorites. I'm looking forward to see how this progresses from here with Scott and Julie. Sometimes all it takes is a little seed money to gain some momentum to achieve success, and these two certainly seem dedicated to their idea.

As one who has a project bigger than himself, I know the trials and tribulations of trying to do everything on your own, from websites, research, video production, presentations, business plans, patents... ughhh.. but it's a labor of love as I can see this is for them.

Congrats you two... this was well earned.

A great example of utilizing social networks to get support behind an idea! Thank you to the Ecomagination team for providing such a great platform.

It will show fairness and cautiousness for GE to make the votes and IPs public of the entry Solar Roadways, it has been doubted from the Challenge community for a while. The solar professional industry finds it difficult to believe such an idea can bring any good to society.

Thank you so much everybody - we really appreciate all of the support and kind words! We thank the good Lord and GE for this wonderful experience. We've made some great friends along the way and we hope to work with many of you down the road (pun intended!). Good luck in Round 2 everyone.

A. Nonymous said: "Any mind stretched by a GOOD IDEA can never return to its original shape." Congratulations to Julie & Scott, and to all of the dedicated INNOV8Rs committed to GE's Ecomagination Challenge. You are all helping to stretch a lot of young & old minds.

This concept of "Crowd-sourcing ideas" is just in it's infancy, but GE is doing a right responsible job of launching this very old idea with a lot of new & effective twists. VOILA...!

What a community of "idea-fanatics" you are building.

Congratulations Solar Roadways! Your idea is so great and unique.
Comment By SiDolina Technologies Oct 10 2010

It might be a good idea for GE to do some patent searches to see how innovative an entry actually is. Example: http://www.wipo.int/pctdb/en/wo.jsp?WO=2005086979

Oops maybe?

Fromm the Ecomagination contest rules: "Participation is subject to all federal, state and local laws and regulations. Void where prohibited or restricted by law. You are responsible for checking applicable laws and regulations in your jurisdiction before participating in the Event to make sure that your participation is legal". [I am not saying there's any patent violation, as that is for lawyers and judges to decide at a patent owner's discretion... just pointing to a patent that looks TO ME, as a layperson, like the very same idea and if it actually is, this entry would be prohibited by law unless licensed from a patent owner. Same goes for any other candidate in this contest, irrespective of any PR machine, or video production, behind it]

This win will surely inspire the inroad of Solar Technology into our daily lives soon.
Congrats to the winners !!

Fantastic, I belive this validates the contest as real people with real ideas are already being recognized. I have read about their idea and it is wonderful.

To Mr. Turudic of SiDolina Technologies:
Our patent attorneys came across the abandoned application you listed when we did our patent search. Our attorneys explained that it is not a patent - but rather an application that was rejected by the international searching authority.

We also congratulate the winners, but it is also disappointing, that the most commented and most promising of all of the ideas on this forum has not been chosen.

However, Searl Magnetics, Inc. is in a position to proceed with the Searl Effect Generator redevelopment program independently and let the future judge the GE panel’s unadventurous selections.

We are looking forward to turning the tables in the near future, so watch for updates at our websites as we continue to our progress towards better future with the Searl Effect Technology.

Hi,congratulations, I'd like to sharing your happiness and your innovation idea.
,And meanwhile,I still have some questions and would you mind answering some question about your invention on the GE-web?

1.Regarding the solar panel efficiency.

a.The normal solar panel efficiency is up to 17%.If your panel can be place on the road and that would be flat and so there is an angle with sunlight.and so,your efficiency could be lower than normal panel about 30%.

b.The panel glass should be very thick glass for the purpose of carrying the weight of Vehicle. in common sense, the more thick the less transparent. I suppose can be easy accepted if your transparent is less 20% than normal glass.

c.How can you consider the shading impact? In your design, that could be great affect.

d. Your efficiency is about 17% *70%*80%*80%=7.6%

2.Regarding the cost of you design.

a.The normal float glass can be used in your system for the reason of thickness and smoothness reasons and you should consider making the special glass for the special purpose . and so that could be expensive that normal.

b.The cell in your solar panel is a very special cell, that also could be expensive than normal.

c.And so we suppose your cost is 30-50% higher than normal panel.

3.Regarding the output power feedback
a.The normal solar panel is about 15-20 years.
b.Your feedback could be 15*17/(7.6*50%)=67 years

And so ,for these reason above, it's hard to understand your innovation can be accepted by GE.
